Is October the best time to visit the Smoky Mountains? Many visitors think that October is the only time to visit to see the colors of the Smokies. Others are waiting on the ‘first big freeze’ before planning their stay. We’re here to uncover these myths and give you a better idea of what happens in the Smoky Mountains in the fall. It is true that the best time to see the fall foliage in the Smoky Mountains is October, but that doesn’t mean it’s the only time to see the colors. Although mid to late October is the peak season, the colors will start to arrive at the beginning of the month of October and are expected to last through at least the first couple of weeks of November.

What does the weather have to be to make the leaves change colors? We’re sure you’ve heard that you have to wait on a big freeze before the fall colors start to change. While this is understandable, it’s not completely true. The fall weather, which is much cooler than the summer temperatures, obviously plays a factor into the changing of the colors. When the weather starts to change and the cooler temperatures arrive in the mountains, The cooler temperatures draw out the green pigments, which exposes the reds, yellows and oranges. The fall temperatures will be coolest in the upper elevations, and then the cool weather will move itself to the lower elevations. For this reason, the colors in the upper elevations will begin to change before the lower elevations.
