Every year in early summer, thousands of fireflies gather in one area in the national park and create one of the most stunning natural light shows. Only one of two places in the world where an event like this occurs, visitors to the Smoky Mountain fireflies will be in awe as they observe the fireflies illuminate the scene with what could be interpreted as a switch.

Dates & Time

This year’s Gatlinburg firefly event will take place June 4-11. Parking passes will be on sale beginning at 10 a.m. the day before each scheduled viewing day. Be sure to purchase your pass as soon as possible as they are known to sell out quickly. There will be 36 large vehicle parking passes available each day of viewing.

The time of your tour will depend on the time printed on your parking pass. Officials with the Great Smoky Mountains National Park request that families and visitors arrive within 30 minutes of the time printed on their pass.

Families and guests who choose to visit the synchronous fireflies at Elkmont will enjoy the ability to travel from the designated parking location at the Sugarlands Visitor Center to the viewing area via the Gatlinburg Trolley.

The trolley will operate each night of the viewing, and routes will run from 7 p.m. to 12 a.m. nightly. Round trip tickets on the trolley are only $1 per passenger, and are payable upon pick up at the visitor center. Please have exact change for all members of your party.

What Do We Need to Bring?

Visitors to the Smoky Mountain fireflies may want to bring a blanket or a chair to sit on during their tour as these will not be provided. Also, families are encouraged to bring light snacks and something to drink as no concession area is available in the national park. We do ask that families and visitors be sure to properly dispose of any trash they may take into the park. We want to keep our national park as beautiful as possible.
